Last Friday we were honored to participate in the unveiling of Kendrick Castillo’s new memorial in Civic Green Park. Kendrick’s parents, John and Maria, his friends, teachers, as well as Douglas County officials were present to honor our local hero in a heartfelt ceremony that was well-attended by our community.
The distinct black basalt monument stands seven feet tall with three sides, a design rich with symbolism reflecting both the Castillo family of three and their deep Christian faith in the Holy Trinity.
Each face of the tower honors a core part of Kendrick’s identity: one side features a cross with his full name and birthdate; another displays a fully wrapped, engraved American flag, recognizing his patriotism and love for his country; and the third depicts a bald eagle soaring above mountains beside an image of Kendrick sitting on his beloved Jeep.
Other special symbols were engraved on several boulders surrounding the column; including the Knights of Columbus Emblem, his footprints and his favorite Zig Ziglar and Albert Einstein quotes.
The Kendrick Castillo Memorial Monument was made possible through the help of Kyle Clark’s Word of Thanks microgiving campaign, The Douglas County Community Fund, Seven Stones Chatfield, Castillo Memorial Fund and Oversight Committee.
