With the change of seasons to Fall, we are having more frequent windy days and wind gusting over 60 mph.

If history is any indication, we expect more windy days in the coming weeks.

You may ask why does it matter to us?

While we welcome the change of seasons with all their beauty and transformation, we also need to think about protecting our visitors, our team, and the wildlife that frequents our grounds.

Please, see below for some key considerations for the safety of others during this season.

Here are some key “rules of thumb” to keep in mind before bringing items into the gardens.

1) If the wind takes this item, can it damage a monument or end up as litter in the gardens or along the road? It would be best to keep these items at home.

2) Is the item, I want to leave, less than 5″ in height and/or width (generally approved – however, please check first)? If larger than 5″ x 5″, the garden care team will remove and reach out to you.

3) Do I have more than seven (7) items at my space? If so, some items will need to be removed before bringing new items. On average, families have between 0-7 items. As we keep growing, too many items tend to detract from the beautiful monuments and natural beauty of the gardens.

4) Are any of the items weathered and/or unsightly? If yes, please know that they will be removed, to keep the gardens looking pristine and well kept.

5) Could my item be damaged from a lawn mower or snow blower or cause damage to the equipment or others nearby if caught up in this type of equipment? Typically, this can be a problem in Whisper Walk (with snow blower), Meadow (with lawn mower), and Renewal Garden (with mower & blower).

6) Is the item I want to bring used in a sport or considered sports memorabilia? These items may be left for up to four weeks after a service, then we will retrieve and call you to pick up.

7) Does the item I want to bring have batteries or solar power? If so, these items are prohibited.

8) Is my item on a metal stake? Unfortunately, we must prohibit all metal stakes going forward, due to the damage caused to the irrigation system.

9) If my item is a one-of-a-kind, precious memento, a public cemetery is not the best place for it because of the many weather-related reasons already identified.

We hope that these guidelines will be easy to follow and you will consider them for your safety and others. If you have any questions, we’re here to help,

Becky and the Garden Team
